The smoking ban in England - good or bad

Living Add comments

So as of this Sunday smoking in public places such as pubs, clubs and restaurants will be officially as illegal as killing someone is. What does everyone think about this.

I have mentioned this here before that most of the facts I spurt out are completely unfounded and usually just things I vaguely remember hearing. So here’s one. I heard that there is no substantial evidence that passive smoking causes serious harm… this may not be true.

What does everyone think. Is it a good thing or is it going to ruin the infamous “smoky atmosphere” British people have kind of romanticised about it’s small local pubs.

As a non smoker I think it’s a good thing cause your clothes and hair doesn’t stink when your hungover and the last thing you want to smell is smoke.

When I was in New York you couldn’t smoke in the pubs and I think it aided in not giving you as bad a hangover. Also the smokers liked it because they had their own little cool kids smoking gang thing going on outside.

What do you think… is the smoking ban good or bad?

    Good, in a way.

I know a few people who have started smoking since the smoking ban has come into play here. I’ve got a post written up about it next week.

It’s bad for your google ads though ;)

I’m a heavy smoker and personally I still haven’t made a decision whether it is good or not. If clubs are going to have special smoking sections where it is easy for you to go in and out then I am more than happy for them to ban it. I think clubs will be silly not to cater for smokers as there are so many people that do smoke and people will just get pissed off if they cant have a fag and will probably end up sparking up anyway. The whole smelling of smoke thing the next morning is true though. It definitely does make you feel more rough and hungover.

as soon as you started talking about smelly hair you convinced me. so.. good ban.

I rarely smoke, but I think it’s a shitty idea. We had the new laws kick in yesterday aswell. I love the “smoky atmosphere” though, it stops you smelling the piss and stale beer that you’re going to start smelling again. And they’ve already said it’s going to cost pubs in NSW 3.8 million (or billion?) in the first year. Baaaaaaad idea me thinks.
