Is modern art good and boundary pushing or is it a load of overpriced rubbish

Right, today my cultured readers I want to talk about the amazing wonder of modern art.

Do you think modern art really makes you think in ways you hadn’t considered before, or do you think it is a load of old crap and anyone can cut a cow in half as long as they can blag it?

My opinion on this matter is that some modern art is absolutely amazing and thought provoking. I am a big fan of this guy Maurizio Cattelan who is a conceptual artist, he doesn’t do interviews, but has been known to say “anyone can be an artist”.

On the other hand I think some artists, like Damien Hirst is a massively overrated piece of crap. I don’t really want to go into too much detail about my opinions, I want to know what you guys think.

Do you think if you can blag it you could sell a cup of tea in a glass box on the basis that *doing that voice where you pinch your nose* “… tea is so comforting and warm, in this modern age we really need to have something of such great comfort to make life bearable. Therefore I believe without cups of tea human existence would cease to exist due to stress induced takings of one’s life. Tea is the saviour, like a modern day Jesus…”

I just realised this is probably one of my most serious posts ever, so I will end with a joke. So this Essex girl (sorry) is in a car crash and the fireman who rescues her asks “how many fingers have I got up” and she replies “oh my god my fanny’s paralysed”.

Anyway what do y’all think of Modern Art?

Modern art is rubbish, except for the exhibition that me and han went to on our 2nd day of meeting her. It was slides :)

yeah that slides thing sounded fun.

I think a lot of it is rubbish. I mainly have a problem with the valuing of it-I don’t understand why people would pay millions for Tracey Emin’s bed.

But on the other hand, I think that if someone somewhere appreciates the art, or gets some message from it then maybe it is art and is valuable (in an artistic, aesthetic sense, not a monetary one).

So, again, I’ll sit on the fence.

P.S. I’ve just handed in my last ever essay ever of my academic life..ever! :)

I prefer realist sorts of things. Like Seascapes or landscapes that really make you feel like you are there. I also really like tribal art though.

Basically if I can do it - it’s not art so blocks of colour on other blocks of colour I just think oooh pretty colours not wow that is some piece of art!

I am also a fence sitter in that I have seen some amazing peices of modern art but that is balanced out by the sheer amount of things which just make the little ‘?’ pop up over my head.
My personal favourites when it comes to art is photography and a few paintings so some of the things like Emin’s bed and Hirst’s work goes over my head a little.

Haha fantastic joke. And http://www.postmedia.net/cattelan/hollywood.htm is pretty fantastic too. I don’t know. I’m not very intelligent. I don’t like deep thought. But what I do think is that everyone is doing whatever they can to be alternative. Is that even related?

Oh and this probably isn’t related either.. but you know those paintings when it’s just paint splashed and flicked all over a canvas? My response is like most people’s responses who don’t understand art: “I could do that”.
